If you read my previous article about the Real Momās Guide and Logistics Tips for the Icon of the Seas with Toddlers, youāll know that the stop at Royal Caribbeanās private island in the Bahamas (Perfect Day at CocoCay) is usually one of the most anticipated days of the whole itinerary.
Before the trip, the advertising I saw said it was an incredible, fun place where everything flows wonderfully. And yes, the island is visually stunning, but if you go with a baby or a toddler, the day-to-day reality is very different from what you see on social media.
We went in September, and between the walks under the sun, the humidity and the pool restrictions, the day can be quite rough if you donāt know what youāre getting into. Here Iām sharing, based on my experience, what actually works for the little ones, the downsides and my 100% honest opinion on whether itās worth getting off the ship with small children.
āļø The reality of the weather: itās WAY too hot (our experience in September)
We visited CocoCay in September and it still felt really hot. The combination of direct sun, humidity and walking on hot concrete and sand wears anyone out, especially a small child. Shortly after getting off the ship, my daughter already looked visibly exhausted, overheated and sweaty.
For small children I recommend bringing at least:
- š§ Thermal flask for cold water: Essential for keeping water truly ice-cold, and you can keep refilling it.
š See stainless steel thermoses for kids on Amazon - š§“ Mineral sunscreen: For their face and body without stinging their eyes or damaging their sensitive skin.
š Check out mineral sunscreen for babies and kids on Amazon - š Hat with UV sun protection: Look for ones that cover the neck and have an adjustable cord so they donāt fly off.
š See sun-protection beach hats for kids on Amazon - 𩱠Long-sleeve swim shirt (rashguard): It saves you from slathering sunscreen on their back and arms every minute and prevents chafing.

š¦ Water Play Options for Small Children: Which Slides Can They Actually Go On?
One of the big questions when planning CocoCay with small children is whether itās worth paying the extra pass for the big slide park (Thrill Waterpark). My short answer: for a toddler, NO.
The vast majority of the tall slides require a minimum height of 40 to 48 inches (102 to 122 cm). Fortunately, the free areas of the island have options designed for younger ages:
1. Captain Jillās Galleon š“āā ļø
Itās the first thing you see shortly after entering the island: a pirate ship with water cannons, interactive fountains and small dry and water slides. Itās a fun area for a quick 15-minute stop while the kids get acclimated, but since itās in full sun, the floor and surfaces can get quite hot.
2. Splashaway Bay (The Free Kidsā Water Zone) š
This is the area that would be aimed at families with small children. It has giant buckets that dump water, interactive sprayers and several small and medium slides.
- The reality of the slides: Although it looks very friendly, many of the slides at Splashaway Bay have a minimum height of 36 inches (91 cm). In our case, being a toddler, my daughter could only go on one single very low slide. On all the others she either didnāt meet the required height or the force of the water at the end made her uneasy.
ā ļø Watch out for diapers in the pools
This is a critical detail that so many moms donāt know before their cruise and that can ruin your plans: Just like on the ship, babies and toddlers who wear diapers (even special swim diapers) are not allowed in the islandās regular pools.
šļø The Family Section: Harbor Beach
If youāre looking for sand and calm sea water, the most protected area for families with small children is Harbor Beach.
Since itās an inland lagoon, it has practically no waves, which gives you a lot of peace of mind so toddlers can play at the waterās edge sitting down with their sand toys without the scare of a wave knocking them over.

At this beach there were CHICKENS, my daughter didnāt like them at all and it was what eventually made us go back to the ship, but I understand that for other kids it could be the complete opposite:
- š Free-roaming chickens on the beach: There are literally LOTS of chickens and chicks wandering freely among the loungers and the sand.
- š Fish at the shore: The water is so crystal clear and still that you can see the fish swimming around your body.
š¦ Ice Cream Stations
Just like on the ship, at the islandās food buffets (like Chill Grill or Skipperās Grill) youāll find self-serve ice cream cones. Considering how heavy the heat can get, this is something that can cool you down.
āļø The reality of visiting CocoCay island with toddlers or small children
The Good (The Pros):
- Included services: You donāt need to spend extra on food or basic drinks; the beach buffets and soft-serve ice cream are included in your cruise.
- Wave-free sea at Harbor Beach: The family lagoon is perfect for the little ones to splash around without any risk of currents.
- Animals around the beach (pro and con): Seeing the little fish in the clear water and the chickens walking on the sand entertains kids naturally.
- Spaces with what you need: There are loungers with umbrellas everywhere, kidsā life jackets available and clean bathrooms with changing tables.
To Consider (The Cons):
- The extreme heat: In warm months the heat is very strong, plus there isnāt enough shade between transfers and it can be too much for the kids.
- Strict diaper restriction: Zero pool access for kids who arenāt potty trained.
- Limited attractions for toddlers: Almost no slide is suitable for their height.
- Long distances: Walking back to the ship under the sun with an exhausted little girl in your arms or pushing the stroller is too much.
š” My Mom Recommendation: āA Little While and Thatās Itā (Or the Secret of Staying on the Ship)
Being completely honest: do I recommend Perfect Day at CocoCay with small children?
Yes, but with clear expectations and for a limited time.
My number one recommendation is: donāt try to stay there all day. The ideal is to get off early, spend at most a couple of hours enjoying the calm beach, give them their ice cream cone, see the fish, splash in the sprayers and head back to the ship before noon, right when the sun reaches its most suffocating point.
š¢ The Hack Nobody Tells You: Enjoying the Empty Ship
And here comes my biggest confession: I donāt judge you in the slightest if you decide not to get off or if you go back to the ship. In fact, it was the best thing we did. When everyone gets off on the island, the ship is completely empty.
In our case, when we got back on the ship we went straight to the family deck (Surfside on the Icon of the Seas): my daughter got to go down the slide as many times as she wanted, with no lines or pushing. That time on the empty ship she enjoyed far more than any corner of CocoCay.
